THE SCILIF LIGHTING SYSTEM MAKING MOTORCYCLISTS VISIBLE
When does a motorcycle rider need to be seen even more than normal? The general answer is in times of reduced visibility due to environmental conditions. As such we present the SCILIF SunFibre fibre optical cable, which is a unique lighting system that immediately raises visibility, at the touch of a button.
AIRBAGS FOR THE DAKAR
This year’s Dakar Rally marked a certain first in its history, but in what way? 2021 was the first year that competitors, just as in Moto GP, were obliged to have airbag protection. As to just how the airbag manufacturers, and the riders themselves handled it, we spoke to PSí brand ambassador Tomáš Kubienou about his, and his Lithuanian colleague Laisvydas Kancius, experience.
NEW SHOULDER AND ELBOW PROTECTION TECHNOLOGY - DEAS
The safety and protection of the wearer, always has, and forever shall be, the number one priority in the construction of motorcycle clothing at PSí. Since the outset of the company, we have been doing our own development. In the beginning this was based on the experience of our founder, ing Libor Hubík, from his everyday riding on street, touring and track machines. As time progressed, we included testing from professional riders, in the most prestigious classes of motorcycle racing, right up until today, and our cooperation with the faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of West Bohemia (ZČU) in Pilsen, and the joint project of protective motorcycle clothing.
HOW DOES THE AIRBAG WORK IN A MOTORCYCLE CRASH?
Alexandra (Saša) Pelikánová experienced a formidable highside crash, within a group of other riders, during a SSP300 race at the Italian circuit of Misano. Just how did her protective suit, with its built-in air bag system, work? Did Saša escape without injury?

Printed suits – Design and safety together
What do we call a “printed suit”?
We’re talking about a suit that has the design printed directly onto the leather. The suit is not cut and sewn from a large number of separate pieces of colored leather, lettering and logos. It is instead, cut out of the largest pieces of leather to reduce the seams to a bare minimum, which means increased safety.
SUIT DESIGN: PROTECTION, COMFORT, WEIGHT, AERODYNAMICS
The basic requirement of racing suit design is to achieve a maximum pilot’s protection when keeping the comfort, unlimited free movement on the motorbike. These two on first view very conflicting requirements are successfully met by up-to-date materials and a sophisticated design of particular parts.
PROTECTORS ARE AN INDISPENSABLE PART OF SUIT
The basic function of a protector is to absorb the shock in the exposed area, it means mostly in the joint area. The maximum values transmission of impact force for standard usage is defined by EN 1621 standard.
HOW IS IT ALL CONNECTED: BY SEAMS AND THREADS
For the flexible and also sufficiently rigid connection polyester threads are mostly used which retain about 5 kilograms in tension. In addition, they must be sufficiently resistant to all matters or agents which exist with motorbikes, such as petrol, water solutions and various solvents. Next conditions are resistance to fungal attack and sufficiently long lifetime.
SUIT MATERIALS: LEATHER, KEVLAR, CERAMICS
The basic material of the racing suits has ever been true leather for tens of years. The most used leather (tanned processed leather) is cow leather, so called face leather. It is the most available high-quality material and it has a high strength and a great abrasion resistance thanks to modern processing methods.
